Savings cooperative ex-chairman surrenders over alleged fraud

Dr Sawat Saengbangpla - the former chairman of the Chulalongkorn University Savings Cooperative who was wanted for public fraud after allegedly luring people to participate in a lottery investment scam causing millions in damages - surrendered to the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) in Bangkok early Monday morning.

Sawat presented himself to police investigators at around 2am, confirmed CSD chief Pol Maj-General Suthin Sappuang.
A source said that police would object to Sawat being released on bail when they brought him to apply for court approval for his first detention period tomorrow, on the grounds that this case had caused Bt540 million in damages to almost 100 victims.
