Coup robbed the country of opportunities: academics

Thailand would likely have performed much better had the National Council for Peace and Order not seized power and taken authoritarian control of the Kingdom during the past three years, said academics on Monday.

The Thai Academic Network for Civil Rights held a press briefing to elaborate on what it said were opportunities Thailand had lost during the junta’s rule.
The event marked the third anniversary of the staging of the 2014 coup.
They divided the opportunities into 10 categories: freedom of expression; democracy building; economic growth; public participation in resource management; the honour of low-income people; decent welfare and basic needs; a resolution to the deep South insurgency; the inspection of military spending; Thailand’s reputation internationally; and the country’s democracy-related history.
