The Ayutthaya provincial administration on Wednesday launched a flood-monitoring centre in preparation for expected runoff from upstream during the monsoon season.

Ayutthaya Governor Dr Sujin Chaichumsak opened the centre, which is meant to coordinate all concerned government agencies and the Army in the province.
The governor also instructed the Ayutthaya irrigation office to work with local administrations in Bang Bal, Sena and Phakphai districts to drain floodwaters from 40,000 rai (6,400 hectares) of paddy fields to prevent the crop from rotting.
The officials were told to use high-powered water pumps donated by Japan during the massive flooding in 2011 to start draining water in Bang Bal.
