New lending rises in May, boosted by loans to large corporates

New lending last month was 0.43 per cent higher than the April level, and some 1.67 per cent more than in the same period last year, according to a Kasikorn Research Centre report released on Monday.

Growth in new lending was chiefly due to borrowing by large corporates, which took out mainly short-term loans for investment purposes in May, while new loans to small and medium-sized enterprises and personal loans were much the same as in the previous month, the research house said.
Kasikorn Research Centre forecasts that overall net new lending in the second quarter will be nearly 2 per cent higher than in the corresponding period last year.
