Army ready for public hearings on ‘social contract’

The Army is ready to hold public hearings on the so-called “social contract” draft once the supreme committee on reform, reconciliation, and national strategy, chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, approves it, possibly at the meeting next week, Army chief General Chalermchai Sitthisart said on Thursday.

Chalermchai said the hearings would be arranged by the Army’s internal security officers in all regions before the opinions from the forums are gathered and used to fine-tune the contract draft. The draft, developed by the reconciliation sub-panel he chairs based on synergies of views shared by political parties and groups, has been submitted to the government’s reconciliation committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan.
Chalermchai said the contract is not legally binding but expresses the government’s commitment to the people. His working group would group opinions into three subjects – those being implemented immediately, those that need reform, and those that need the supreme body’s approval.
