Colonel Kidakorn Chantra, commander of the Pha Mueang Taskforce in Chiang Rai, said the joint team of troops and police found the drug hidden in the forest on Friday after they spotted a pickup tuck and questioned two brothers who appeared suspicious.
Kidakorn said the pickup truck was stopped by his troops at a checkpoint on a road behind the Tesco-Lotus shopping mall in Mae Sai district at 3am on Friday.
During a press conference on Saturday, Kidakorn declined to name the brothers because they had not been formally charged.
Kidakorn said the authorities did not find any illegal items in the truck but they noticed that the brothers appeared nervous and had given conflicting accounts of why they were out driving at an unusual hour. This prompted the order to search the forest nearby, where the drugs were uncovered.
The men would be released if no evidence could be found to link them to the drugs, Kidakorn added.
