SEA Games squash players injured in bus crash

SEA Games squash players injured in bus crash

Athletes including Thais were slightly injured on Monday when their shuttle buses collided en route to the SEA Games women’s squash competition in Malaysia, forcing the event’s postponement.

Thailand national squash team manager Akkarin Hiranyapruek said a bus carrying the Myanmar squad rear-ended another in which Thai and Filipina players were riding.
The buses were travelling from the players’ hotel in Kuala Lumpur to the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jaril, just south of the capital.
Several Thai and Filipina athletes sitting in the rear seats suffered injuries, but none serious.
“The players were a bit frightened,” Akkarin said. “An official in Malaysia called me to ask about the accident and express deepest apologies on behalf of the host country. But we understand – no one wanted this to happen.”
The players injuries – bruising and sore backs and necks – have forced Games organisers to rearrange the competition schedule.
