Three of four King Rama IX coins are booked out already

Three out of the four types of commemorative coin minted for the funeral of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej have been fully booked by Wednesday – the second day after the Finance Ministry’s Treasury Department started to accept public reservations to purchase them.

Treasury Department chief Patchara Anuntasilpa said on Wednesday that the 99,999 gold coins that cost Bt50,000 apiece, the 399,999 silver coins that cost Bt2,000 each, and the 39,999 sandblasted, black-coated bronze coins that cost Bt3,000 each were fully booked. Only the copper-nickel coins, which cost Bt100 each, are still available. About 26 million of these coins will be available for people to purchase, he said. However, he estimated that they, too, would be fully booked by the end of this week.
Patchara said the department would propose that an additional batch of commemorative coins be minted, but officials would first check the relevant laws to see if it would be able to do so.
