People steal fish left on road after traffic accident

A truck transporting three tons of freshwater fish to a market was rear-ended by a trailer truck early Monday morning, causing the fish to spill on to a road in Nakhon Pathom province and then get stolen by nearby residents as the shocked owner of the haul looked on.

Police learned about the accident at about 5.45am.
When police and foundation accident rescuers arrived at the scene of the accident on inbound Phetkasem Road in Moo 5 village, tambon Lam Phraya, Muang district, they found many locals grabbing fish off the road and stuffing them into bags.
The owner of the fish, Sawat Pheungphan, 82, was left with a fraction of the original haul to load back into the truck.
Sawat had hired Somjit Chanchuathaew to deliver the fish to a fish market in Bang Mod in Bangkok, hoping to earn at least Bt50,000.
He had hired villagers to catch the fish from his pond.
Sawat and Somjit were not injured in the accident.
The trailer-truck driver, Nirut Khumkaew, 31, was injured and was treated at Nakhon Pathom Hospital.
