Freshwater floods killing off farmed fish in Trang

Flooding in southern Trang province resulted in the death of fish being raised in 244 floating baskets along the coast of Palian district, it was revealed on Monday.

The damage has preliminarily been estimated at Bt2 million.
The fish are believed to have died because of freshwater pouring into the offshore saltwater areas where the baskets are kept.
It’s both muddy and a different temperature than the seawater.
Bidol Hukhieo, 58, one of 40 Ban Thon Han fish farmers affected, said each of them had lost between Bt50,000 and Bt60,000 in investments.
Somboon Chaisenee, 57, president of the local fishermen’s group, put his own loss at hundreds of thousands of baht.
Somboon said fish in 244 floating baskets had died in a “natural disaster” and urged state agencies to provide aid.
“We have tonnes of dead fish and we don’t have the manpower to bury them all,” he said. “We can’t sell the fish at even Bt10 per kilogram either because people already have lots of fish in stock.”
District chief Silpachai Ruansung said he was contacting the provincial fisheries office to have the damage assessed.
He said farmers who were registered to raise fish in baskets would receive compensation, but he was not yet sure about the others.
Trang has been enduring heavy rains since September 20, resulting in six districts inundated and more than 4,200 residents affected.
