Surayud, representing His Majesty, placed the wreath at a ceremony at 9.30am. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan and commanders-in-chief of the Armed Forces attended the ceremony.
Held by the War Veterans Organisation to honour soldiers who have sacrificed their lives to defend Thailand’s sovereignty, the ceremony was attended by military attaches of foreign embassies, senior government officials and representatives of the private sector.
Victory Monument was decorated with poppies and the four lanterns around the monument were lit to remember the slain troops.
In the afternoon, a parade of troops from the Army, Navy, and Air Force as well as policemen from Royal Thai Police will be held at the 11th Infantry Regiment. War veterans, who fought in the Korea War and Vietnam War, will also join the parade.
