Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit ordered the Department of Internal Trade (DIT) today (March 9) to investigate a case in which 200 million face masks were allegedly hoarded and sold for Bt14 each with the acknowledgment of a Cabinet minister.

“There were several complaints about the matter and officials have arrested those who have violated the law. There will be no exceptions, even though the wrongdoer is close to a minister,” Jurin said.
DIT director-general Wichai Pochanakit said the person who was accused had no association whatsoever with either the Commerce or Agriculture and Cooperatives ministries.
Thailand has the capacity to produce 1.2 million face masks per day, so it would take more than a year to hoard 200 million of the items, Wichai said. Therefore, he believed the alleged deal might just be a pre-order.
The director asked the media and the public to contemplate the information before believing it.
Regarding the price, the law stipulates that vendors cannot price face masks at more than Bt2.50 each. Any violation will result in five years’ imprisonment or a Bt100,000 fine, or both.
