I have the "courage" to become president : Suu Kyi

Myanmar's Nobel-prize-winning opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday said she was ready to become president, after returning from her first trip to the United States in two decades.

"As the leader of a political party I have the courage to become president, if the people want it," Suu Kyi told reporters in Yangon on Monday.

Her party, the National League for Democracy, is working to change the constitution, which contains a clause effectively barring her.

The 67-year-old spent 15 years under house arrest between 1989 to 2010 for her opposition to the military junta which ruled the country.

Since being freed in November 2010, she has joined mainstream politics as a member of parliament after winning a seat inan April 1 by-election.

Myanmar was ruled by a military junta until democratic elections in 2010 that elected Thein Sein, a former army general who has pursued far-reaching political and economic reforms since taking office.

Thein Sein has met repeatedly with Suu Kyi, and told the BBC last month he could imagine her becoming president.
