R Sri Sanjeevan suffered gunshot wounds on Saturday in Bahau town of Negeri Sembilan state, about 88 kilometres south of Kuala Lumpur.
The victim, who was driving his car and accompanied by a friend, had stopped at a traffic light junction when a pillon rider fired at him.
Doctors were treating Sanjeevan, who was hit in the ribs and right arm, at a hospital in Negeri Sembilan’s capital of Seremban.
Sanjeevan, chairman of the Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force, has criticised the police force for its failure to curb crime in the predominantly Muslim Southeast Asian country.
He also accused some police officers of involvement in crimes and protecting crime syndicates.
Prior to the attack, the victim tweeted that a police officer “told some syndicate fellow that he’ll get them firearms and told them to fire few shots at my house to scare me and my family”.
