UEC's first meeting with media

The Union Election Commission (UEC) held its first-ever talks with media associations on Friday.

Attending the meeting with Tin Aye, UEC chairperson, were members of Myanmar Press Council (interim), Myanmar Journalists Network (MJN) and the Myanmar Journalists Union (MJU).
Tin Aye said the commission was eager to see the media do its job, saying: “What the UEC wants is a strong media.”
Thiha Saw, a member of the MPC, asked specifically if “opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi [can] carry out canvassing only in one area?”
Tin Aye responded: “The UEC’s directives are not aimed at restricting the canvass area. A party leader as well as a representative can do canvassing during the one-month period.”
Kyaw Min Swe, secretary of the MPC, also queried Tin Aye about UEC directives on canvassing and advance balloting,
UEC directives specify that the candidate or their representative, or their party’s representative or those endorsed by the said candidate, can carry out canvassing.
