Step to end child slavery nears

Myanmar will begin implementing the International Labour Organisation's Convention 182, which calls for the elimination of the worst forms of child labour, by December, according to the Ministry of Labour.

Myanmar agreed to implement the convention during an ILO conference in Geneva last year, and officials have said implementation will begin by December 18.
The convention calls for the elimination of all types of slavery, including the sale and trafficking of children, forced labour to pay off a debt, any other type of forced labour, including using children in war and armed conflict. It also calls for the elimination of all activities that sexually exploit children, such as prostitution, pornography or pornographic performances, as well as any involvement in illegal activities, especially the production or trafficking of drugs. The convention also calls for the elimination of all work that could damage the health, safety or well being of children.
