Scientists to test quality of Ayeyawady River

MANDALAY - The Department of Environmental Conservation together with university scientists will be testing the water quality of the Ayeyawady and Doakhtawady rivers for traces of contamination and chemical waste.

“The Ayeyawady is affected by chemical waste from the gold mines in upper sections and sewage from Hteegyaik and Maungkone areas. It is better to check the water quality and carry out systematic removal of waste products,” said Tin Thit, chairman of Sein Yaung So environmental conservation group.

Water pollution due to sewage water and industrial waste from the from Mandalay industrial zone is said to be affecting the Ayeyawady and Doakhtawady rivers.

As a result, fish in that area have declined. Village residents along the river also no longer consume the water because of the amount of sewage.

Scientists from Mandalay City Development Committee, Mandalay University and s Yatanarpon University will also cooperate in the water testing.

Thorough investigation will be made for minerals and chemicals. Underground water tables will aslo be checked.
