“I have been doing a road safety campaign for five years. I have campaigned in Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, China, India, South America and Africa. It was very scary to travel outside Yangon because the roads are in a terrifying condition,” said Yeoh.
The 52-year-old actress was appointed the global ambassador for the “Make Roads Safe” campaign from 2010 to 2020.
Yeoh arrived in Yangon on Friday to attend the third Memory International Film Heritage Festival. She visited Aung San Suu Kyi’s Kawhmu constituency in Yangon Region the next day where she gave a talk to students about road safety.
“We will work closely with Daw Khin Kyi Foundation. We will learn a lot from the foundation because they know what’s happening on the ground. We have a good relationship,” Yeoh said.
“The Interdisciplinary Centre for Road Safety conducts road safety education for the UN and other organisations. It has been holding a road safety workshop at our academy. They normally charge a fee but a student from the academy died in a car accident so they are holding the workshop for free,” said Zwel Nanda, programme director at the HCTA.
The HCTA was opened in October last year under the guidance of Suu Kyi. It is currently giving training in hospitality to about 100 students.
