Tens of thousands of local residents gathered yesterday in Magway and Yenanchaung, Magway Region, to support the National League for Democracy (NLD) at the party's public rallies.

The NLD supporters held red roses and a 1,000-foot long flag featuring the NLD's emblem to show their support of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
In Magway, famous movie directors, actors and singers gave performances and sang election campaign songs. They also held educational talks on how to vote and behave at the polling booths. The event was attended by about 30,000 people from the town of Magway and from nearby areas.
In the campaign rally in Yenanchaung, entertainers led by famous vocalist May Khala toured the town and performed for tens of thousands of supporters. An incident occurred in which supporters of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party encountered NLD supporters on the street in, and both sides chanted their slogans.
Vocalist Shi said she was pleased to see a large number of supporters and that it was worthwhile participating in the campaign.
"These events are not like musical concerts. Behind us there might be both supporters who have their conviction and those who want to disturb us. But so far, we haven't faced any danger. Instead, we see more and more supporters," Shi said.
In Mibu, where Magway Region chief minister Phone Maw Shwe is running in the upcoming election, tens of thousands of residents showed their support at another NLD campaign rally.
