Winning candidate Aye Mya Mya Myo, in collaboration with non-NLD members, started collecting garbage in Kyauktan Township in Yangon, where she won a Lower House seat. She ran against Ohn Myint, a candidate from the incumbent Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), who serves as the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development.
“We have been collecting rubbish for three weeks in Kyauktan. We started at Yayle Pagoda. We have planned to set up garbage collection services in all of the township's villages. We divided our members into four groups to collect the rubbish in all of the villages,” said Aye Mya Mya Myo.
“We have wanted to do this since the election was over. The people threw rubbish into the Hmawwun creek, which is the life-blood of Kyauktan Township. Throwing the rubbish into the creek can cause health hazards. I intent for the services to be lasting. It is nothing to do with the election result. Some villages do not even have even landfills," she said.
Suu Kyi met with winning candidates from her party at the Royal Rose Restaurant in Yangon on November 28. She instructed them to set up a garbage collection service in their townships in order to keep them clean and healthy.
There are nine wards, 57 village tracts and 80 sub-villages in Kyauktan Township.
