Lawyers’ Network issued the statement in opposition to Myint Aye’s debarring at the end of December.
The statement said the government's debarring of lawyer Myint Aye for his political activities is not in conformity with the law. It highlighted the Bar Council Act, which says if any action arises against a lawyer, the Union Supreme Court should launch an investigation and that the lawyer has the right to defend himself. However, Myint Aye was debarred without having the right to make his case.
"The Bar Council Act stipulates that the high court cannot take direct action against a barrister. An investigation must be launched, and he has the right to defend himself. Action can be taken if he is found guilty. We now oppose it because Myint Aye was sacked as a barrister without having the right to defend himself," lawyer Kyee Myint from the Lawyers’ Network told The Daily Eleven.
He said the Network would demand a review of the decision.
Myint Aye previously staged a solo protest demanding the release of political prisoners and detained students.
