I would like to applaud The Nation for this article, as it confirms the need to up the national level of R&D spending. R&D spending by developed countries is more than 2 per cent of GDP, while Thailand's is less than 1 per cent. The recent Young Scientist Award 2011 to Dr Kajornsak Faungnawakij of Nanotec for his research on nano-catalysts for bio-diesel indicates that Thailand has talented young researchers who, with additional funding support, can help improve the nation's international ranking.
