Hitler would be laughing in his grave

Re: Historical parallels are unfair, Letters, September 5.

I read with much interest the comments from letter writers regarding William Reynolds' comparison of Thailand's present government to Germany under Hitler. I agree with some comments and disagree with others, but the one that amuses me is Somsak Pola's comparison of Abhisit to Hitler. In fact, I laughed out loud, not from the sheer absurdity of it, but from the vision that popped into my head - one of Abhisit sporting Hitler's moustache. In a parallel universe, Somsak's universe, I see this ruthless dictator sitting in a negotiating session, a televised one no less, with core leaders of "Jewish" (red-shirt) protesters while they pressure him to dissolve Parliament. He finally succumbs. They turn him down. He eventually does what they ask anyway. A sorry excuse of a dictator indeed.

Back to reality, while the loss of even one innocent protester's life is inexcusable, I don't think we'd see any survivor from the crackdown if Abhisit really were like Hitler. Why, he wouldn't even tolerate dissent to begin with. In fact, Hitler is turning in his grave and screaming from the nether world: "How dare you compare me to this indecisive wimp!"
