New-car scheme is unjustifiable

Re: "Opposition to new car policy seems self-centred", Letters, September 19.

Meechai Burapa's letter ridiculing the opposition to the government's first car policy seems logical. Based on his belief of the issue, he rightly called them self-centred and unkind to young people in depriving them of the joy and pride of owning a first car.

However, he has intentionally or otherwise completely missed the fundamental point of the issue - a subsidy given for an unjustifiable cause. Instead, he brilliantly described the joy of owning a first-car in which none of the opposition disputed or tried to deprive young people of that joy. A truly proud first-car owner has the satisfaction of the ownership without the government's subsidy of 20 per cent of the cost of his first car; 100 per cent of the money came from his hard-earned salary. It was 100 per cent pride and joy. He did it on his own without the benevolent hand of the country's taxpayers!

As a current taxpayer, I object to my money being spent unwisely in aggravating social ills, which is the real issue, and not Khun Meechai's usual diversion of the issue to serve his cause.
