The fear of genuine justice

Re: "You stand trial where you committed the crime", Letters September 29.

“Disgusted” is right about the two Thai nationals fearing being extradited to Australia because there they fear they will get a fair trial for murder. Another [similarly] good recent example is that of a young Thai-Belgian who murdered a French national in Nonthaburi (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2011/09/04/national/Two-held-in-alleged-murder-of-Frenchman-over-motor-30164456.html). He confessed and re-enacted the crime, yet he got bail, skipped, was caught and escaped again (read “let go”). He was later arrested in Belgium, following an Interpol warrant requested by France. Not surprisingly, his well-connected parents will probably fight extradition to France, or in the worst case argue for a trial in Thailand where he can get bail again on appeal, rather than get “real” justice in France.
