Religion and politics don't mix

Re: "Israel will just keep on building," Letters, September 22.

I was captivated by Yingwai Suchaovanich's imaginary scenario, in which she depicts God as having assigned Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann to run for the presidency of the US. So far as I know, God is not a US citizen. It would be inappropriate for him to interfere in the US political process. Should he choose to do so, the US government might issue a declaration of war, followed by a full nuclear retaliatory response. That would be perfectly consistent with the intelligent decisions the US government has been making lately. Unless I’m mistaken, both Perry and Bachmann are evangelical Protestants. Let’s carry Khun Yingwai’s scenario a bit further, and see what happens when newly-elected President Perry and Vice-President Bachmann manage to score an audience with God:
God: Yes, Rick and Michele, what can I do for you? I hope you’re not going to ask me to solve the US debt problem.
Rick: Lord, we want you to send Jesus back to earth.
God (frowning): Eh? Jesus? That’s my son. Why do you want him back?
Rick: Lord, with me as president, Michele as vice-president, and the Republicans controlling Congress, the US is now ready for the Kingdom of Heaven. But we need Jesus to inaugurate it.
God: What did you do with him the last time you had him?
Rick: Er, uh, ah, we crucified him, as I recall.
God: That’s right. So now you want me to let you have another go at him?
Rick: This time we’ll be nice to him, Lord. We’ll make him our king.
God: If he’s your king, where does that leave you as president? And where does that leave that wonderful American democracy you’re always puffing and blowing about?
Rick: Er, ah, errrrr....
God: You better think before you shoot off your mouth, boy. When Jesus comes back, the human race is going to be in deep doo-dah. It’ll mean the end of the world. And all you folks who think you’ll be going to heaven could very well be headed in the other direction.
Rick: But Jesus can straighten things out. Maybe he can even solve the debt problem.
God: Listen, boy, it’s time for you folks to grow up and start solving your own problems. I’ve got a big universe to run, and I don’t have time to keep sticking my nose into the petty problems you people are always creating. Grow up or ship out.
(Enter Richard Dawkins.)
Dawkins: Yes, that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to tell them.
God: Ah, Dawkins. I have a few choice words for you, Dawkins...
(Curtain. Exeunt omnes.)
And that’s the kind of thing that happens when you mix religion with politics.
