The victim was punished

Judging from The Nation's letters to the editor, most correspondents support the 2006 coup. They say the coup served Thaksin right. Had he toed the line, they say, the coup wouldn't have happened.

He corrupted and enriched himself while he was in power, so it was necessary for the military to intervene. They say the military is supposed to keep the government in line, not the other way. To me, a coup is like rape; it is wrong no matter what.
Thaksin is like a woman who was gang raped, then accused of provoking it. The victim, not the rapists, was tried and found guilty of breaching “the Ancient Code of Conduct for Thai Ladies” by dressing seductively, staying out late, drinking.
Meanwhile, the rapists were cleared of all charges, presented with flowers and hailed for preventing the “moral deterioration in Thai society”.
