Talk of 'Jewish state' unacceptable

A declaration issued on May 14, 1948 by the US government, signed by President Harry Truman, reads:

“This government has been informed that a Jewish state has been proclaimed in Palestine, and recognition has been requested by the [handwritten addition: ‘provisional’] Government thereof.
“The United States recognises the provisional government of the new Jewish state.”
The words “new Jewish state” were deleted and replaced in handwriting by “State of Israel”.
I am in favour of guaranteeing the security of the state of Israel in its 1967 borders, after removal of all settlements on Palestinian land, but I do not support the creation of religious states, including a Jewish one. Not even the Vatican calls itself a Catholic state.
In his letter, Lord of Ballinaboy says that we deduce (whoever he means by “we”) that “the State of Israel has been recognised by the world as a national home for the Jewish people since 1917”. This doesn’t mean however “only” for the Jewish people. Who – in a Jewish state – will guarantee the rights of Christians and Muslim Israeli citizens who have just as many historical rights of citizenship in the state of Israel?
We read that the Government of His Britannic Majesty, in their colonial greatness, was in favour of the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people. No mention of a “Jewish state”.
This all leaves us with the conclusion that a Jewish state is very much a unilateral declaration of the Israeli government, which they try to ram down the throats of anyone who dares to disagree with them.
