The house superstar is returning to Bangkok on Thursday. With the latest sensational CD “Cream Ibiza - Super You & Me” added to his discography, Laidback Luke is on the prowl to kill the Bangkok dance floor.
The Philippines-born, Holland-based electro-house DJ broke into the clubbing scene in the early 2000s and caused a global sensation when he made No 46 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 list in 2008 before jumping to No 27 in 2009 and No 17 last year.
He has worked with artists such as David Guetta, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Junior Sanchez and played throughout Europe and North America as well in Japan and Ibiza.
During the stopover at JFK Airport in New York, the DJ found time to answer our questions via e-mail.
How’s 2011 been for you so far?
It’s been amazing! Every year is a roller coaster, but somehow we always manage to put the year up a notch.
How’s it going with “Cream Ibiza – Super You & Me”?
It went very well. This CD was to promote my own Super You & Me nights at Cream Amnesia Ibiza this year. It was a very successful Ibiza season for me. The nights were very big and the CD added up nicely to it. On top of that I got to host my first festival area ever at Creamfields UK. It was the perfect way to end the season!
You recently remixed for Benny Benassi and Anjulie. How did you like the experience?
I’m really happy how the remixes came out. I’ve been testing them a lot on my dance floors and I know the effect is the best possible. Both artists are amazing to work with too.
I have a lot of remixes lined up. I just did one for Pitbull and Tiesto and Mark Knight, for instance. I’m doing one at the moment for Taio Cruz. A dream collaboration would be with someone like Justin Timberlake.
What’s your latest DJ gear?
My latest is the Pioneer DJM900 Nexus. Really enjoying it at the moment.
Do you have time to work in the studio at all?
Sadly enough I don’t. I take more than 200 flights a year and someone recently counted the gigs I did on the first year of 2011 – I did 127 gigs in six months. So most of what I make and produce, I do on planes and in hotel rooms. My studio is basically my laptop.
How do you stay inspired?
I keep inspired through the fun and love of making music. There’s so much good music out there to get ideas from, too.
What do you do to relax?
I do tai chi and qi gong and watch “Family Guy” before bed.
What do you look forward to in Bangkok this time?
Being back to Thailand – it’s been so long! And of course the amazing Thai food.
What’s the plan for the show?
I’ll bring the energy and the fun and I hope you do the same!
