What a great Plan B!
Vanilla Orange is a place of puffy comfort that's got that citrus tang
Sisters Vanida and Wannee Busrathepkul were going to open a soft-ice-cream bar in Bangkok when they returned from studying in the US, only to discover that the city already had plenty of them.
Plan B – which retained the idea of highlighting sweet and refreshing vanilla orange flavour – was a sweets and snacks shop.
Vanilla Orange at the Nine Mall on Rama IX Road is a place where both gals and guys feel comfortable, says Wannee, because it’s got the sweet treats for the females and a decor that doesn’t scale off the males.
“Sometimes guys feel uncomfortable in a shop decorated in feminine tones,” she says. “We went for dark and bold tones with some Victorian decorative items.”
Wannee says she and her sister see vanilla as “fragrant and tranquil, while orange symbolises fun and joy”.
Vanida studied marketing in Chicago while Wannee did finance at San Diego. Vanida turned into a great cook and baker and returned home with tons of cookbooks. Everyone loved her cakes and urged her to open a bakery.
Meanwhile Wannee took a course in brewing coffee, so they make a great team.
By way of proof, try the lava cake stuffed with hot chocolate and topped with fresh strawberry. It’s Bt140. Wannee’s hot mocha mint (Bt70) isn’t too sweet, and the mint will keep you going.
Banoffee pie (Bt120) is a yummy blend of banana slices baked with caramel and chocolate cream, then topped with whipped cream on a biscuit crust. The whole concoction is served in a glass.
That’s go nice with tea latte (Bt60) or sunrise soda (Bt75), the latter a delicious blend of red syrup, orange juice and soda.
Then there’s custard creme brulee (Bt95), also delectable, with a slice of orange served on the side that helps tone down the creaminess and provides a refreshing kick.
Guys might prefer the Ham-cheese Stick (Bt95) or fried calamari (Bt150).
And a dessert wine is also available at night.
