Unesco decision should be applauded

Cheers for Unesco foresight, approving full membership for Palestinians in a 107-14 vote, defying intimidating Israeli-US threats, resulting in an immediate knee-jerk American cut-off of US$60 million annually.

Now, Palestine’s long-overdue statehood bid for full UN membership, asking for international recognition and independent status, deserves sooner rather than later passage.
Social media has proven its worth as a vital source of open information during times of crisis. Facebook, Twitter, blogs and websites not only spread warning alerts and updates promptly, they also help educate the public about coordination efforts and what to expect next. With the market for Arabic-language news – long dominated by two satellite channels – expanding its global influence to two new 24-hour channels, which aim to play constructive roles in our interconnected times, requires a more tolerant willingness to accept divergent viewpoints. Pax vobiscum!
