Pen-ek has a shot with 'Headshot'

The floodwaters finally parted enough for director Pen-ek "Tom" Ratanaruang to screen his latest movie "Headshot" ("Fon Tok Kuen Fah") in Bangkok on Thursday.

The rest of the world has already watched it at various film festivals.

It’s only showing at SF cinemas, but massive box-office income isn’t a big concern for Tom. “I only need it to earn Bt9 million,” he says.
That might sound odd coming from a man whose critically acclaimed movies are widely ignored as “too arty”, but this is a joint venture with production company Local Color, so they’re sharing the risk. Plus, he got money from the Culture Ministry’s Thai Khem Kan (Strong Thailand) fund and the Goteburg film festival in Switzerland. French production companies Memento and Wildside have pitched in too.
And besides, Tom says, “So far no one’s complained that they don’t understand it.”

Gill implants
Few people think “flood disaster” and “plastic surgery” at the same time, but Yanhee Hospital has done very well in silicone sales amid the crisis, thanks very much.
“Nose jobs Bt5,000!” shouts the advertisement, a discount price just so that women can feel less miserable. Act now: On January 1 the price reverts to Bt9,900.

Good old Dad
MP Chuvit Kamolvisith, a bastion of truth in parliament, lies to his children.
The shocking revelation comes from his eldest son Tontrakul, who tells Praew magazine that he was once amazed when Dad gave him a Louis Vuitton bag as soon as he asked for one.
“I couldn’t figure out why I got it so easily,” the boy says. Then his kid brother asked Dad for a Gucci bag. Dad said he needed a photo of the bag.
“He sent the photo to a vendor at the Soi Salasap market and got the bag made for Bt1,000!” Tontrakul reports. “So I knew where my bag came from.”
Another time, Dad announced a family trip to Hua Hin, but they ended up in Pattani. “We drove for almost 10 hours and he just said we ought to check the place out. We stayed in a Bt300 room – he paid for three rooms but we only used one because it was too spooky to sleep alone.”
