Laguna Phuket Triathlon today

Around 1,000 triathletes from more than 40 countries will plunge into the Andaman Sea this morning to start the Laguna Phuket Triathlon.

Prasert Tanhansa, district sales manager for Thai Airways, the main sponsor of the event, said the airline is proud to support the race.
“We have done everything on our part to make the triathletes comfortable during their travel and stay in the country,” he said.
This year’s Laguna Phuket has also launched the “Laguna Survival Swim Programme” to raise funds for a project that teaches children how to survive in water. Meanwhile, two-time women’s champion Belinda Granger of Australia said she is looking forward to the event with great anticipation. “Laguna Phuket is extremely special for me and my husband. It’s an amazing combination of people, food and excellent atmosphere. I feel like my second home is here.
“I have been back for nine years now. It’s wonderful to see this place improving and growing by leaps and bounds. Sunday’s race will be tough. Many strong triathletes are here, so it’s rather difficult to win the race. However, I’ll do my best.”
Jaray Jearanai, the first Thai triathlete to compete in both the Ironman in Las Vegas and Hawaii, said: “I feel very proud to be here. It’s a major challenge, but I will try my best.”
The Laguna Phuket Triathlon consists of a 1.8km swim, a 55km bike leg and a 12km run.
