Moving most of Bangkok to higher ground would be costly and disruptive. Not doing so would be much more costly and disruptive. Future floods will be considerably worse than this one.
Some older folks reading this might remember Kenny Rogers’ lyrics comparing poker and life, “you gotta know when to fold ’em”. That’s the mantra for Thai leaders – to make the tough decisions that need to be made. Goodbye Bangkok. Hello to new smaller cities built away from flood plains and sinking mud flats.
