You'll find lots of retro gear at VTG - even Sex Pistols tees designed by Vivienne Westwood
A new shopping strip at the corner of Soi Ekamai 10 is proving popular with office workers and local residents who are pleased to have such a wide variety of cafes, restaurants and boutiques within easy walking distance. One store that’s doing a roaring trade is VTG, a boutique for men that’s stocked with rare vintage clothing and accessories as well as gadgets produced by several famous brands of bygone days.
VTG belongs to collector Mongkol Patanapakdee, who first set up shop five years ago offering second-hand clothes and accessories at Chatuchak Weekend Market.
With vintage fashion now back in vogue, he recently decided to join up with some friends and open VTG boutique on Soi Ekamai 10, focusing on second-hand clothing and gadgets and also bringing in some rare items from dead stock as well as reproductions.
The result is a showcase of fashions from the ’50s to the ’80s with such finds as t-shirts screened with images of the Sex Pistol punk rock band designed by Vivienne Westwood, Niki’s tees with a disk-shaped weapon pattern, plain cotton T-shirts by Hanes of America and tees featuring characters from Hollywood movies.
“We’re all fans of vintage fashion and we’ve been adding to our personal collections of old-fashioned apparel and accessories for many years,” Mongkol says. “Our store offers a variety of stuff under a mix and match concept, allowing customers to be playful in the way they dress.”
Shelves are piled with oxford-style cotton shirts, old jeans and workwear by such popular brands as Polo, Levi’s, Hanes and Lee. Among the highlights is a black waterproof jacket by Barbour and vintage sneakers from the dead stocks of Niki, Converse, BF Goodrich and Equator, all of them made between 1950 and 1989.
If you love 50’s to 60’s fashion, check out the genuine leather shoes by Brook Brothers, Rogues Gallery, Wright, the Florsheim Shoe and Johnston & Murphy. Alongside is a gadget corner offering smart shades by Ray-Ban and Cazal, trendy hats in different designs, handkerchiefs from Oshkosh and creative tote bags made from genuine leather, suede and canvas. There’s even space for a barber.
