PM wise to stay out of passport issue

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2011

I don't know whether Richard Bowler is happy with the headline added to his letter ("PM knows nothing about anything", Letters, December 14) but it is untrue, based on press reports which I have read.

Furthermore, Mr Bowler’s comments are misleading.
The PM didn’t say the proposal to issue her brother with a passport was “nothing to do with me”, nor did she say she knew nothing about it; she said she was “not involved”. Big difference! It was right and proper for her to stand aside, given the family relationship, and the fact that the foreign minister had the authority to make such a decision.
Secondly, she indeed knew nothing about the Facebook blunder, as she had hired a team to run her Facebook page, and she has now sacked them. Again, the correct decision.
Finally, according to a report in The Nation, she didn’t decline to say anything about the rumoured Cabinet reshuffle; she apparently said there wasn’t going to be one.
