With just two days remaining before the biennial sports festival for the handicapped athletes conclude, Thailand, who have won the Asean Para Games four times in succession, kept their hopes of retaining their overall crown alive.
Indonesian athletes yesterday dominated the track and field competition with 12 gold medals, leaving closest rivals Thailand to bag only 11 gold. However, the Thai swimmers made a big splash in the pool to capture nine gold medals while Indonesia had eight.
Paralympic gold medallists Pichet Krungget and Supachai Koysub remained unbeaten in their events, with the former taking his fourth gold in the Games yesterday after crossing the finish line first in the men’s 200m wheelchair event. Supachai won his third gold of the Games yesterday when he took the wheelchair 200m in his class.
The hosts dominated the chess competition with a sweep of six gold medals. They also fared well in table tennis, claiming four gold medals.
Thai archers’ accuracy helped them win two gold medals. Their powerlifters came up with some stunning performance to take two gold medals.
After four days, Thailand stay on top of the medal tally with 85 gold, 68 silver and 51 bronze medals. In second place are hosts Indonesia with a haul of 71 gold, 73 silver and 65 bronze.
Malaysia overtook Vietnam for third place with 37 gold, while the Vietnamese had 30 gold medals. The Philippines are a distant fifth place with just 16 gold medals.
