You don’t have to wait for the hot season to chill out with a delicious ice-cream at Little Spoon, a small cafe hidden amongst the high-rise offices on Soi Asoke.
Owned by Kamonsuang Manawongsakul, 28 and Puncharat Techawachirakul, 31, Little Spoon also serves pastries, coffee and freshly made smoothies.
The two pals started in the ice-cream business back in 2009 with a shop called Igloo near Thammasat University Rangsit campus. Last August, they moved into town and expanded their menu to meet the demands of a wider clientele.
Warm and relaxing with natural wood tables, comfortable chairs and sofas designed by the partners themselves, Little Spoon can seat 40.
Talented pastry chef Kamonsuang is in charge of the kitchen and makes all the desserts, researching the recipes from cooking books and trying them out on friends and family.
“While I was studying in England, I spent all my free time making pastries. My friends encouraged me to learn new recipes,” Kamonsuang says.
Glance at the freezer and you’ll find more than 20 different ice creams from which to choose. One of the best sellers is the sticky seriously dark chocolate made from Belgium chocolate and French cocoa powder priced at Bt49 a scoop.
Other popular picks are tamarind sorbet, peach sorbet, watermelon, passion fruit, guava & salted plum, pure vanilla, choco orange, white malt, strawberry sherbet, blueberry cheese pie, fresh milk, summer berries, strawberry yoghurt and Reese’s peanut butter cup.
“My ice cream isn’t too sweet. I use real cream, milk fat and milk instead of sugar,” Kamonsuang says. “For the dark chocolate ice cream, I use chocolate and cocoa powder to create the delicious aroma and strong flavour.”
Other popular items on the menu include strawberry cream cheese and shirio ice cream. For something a bit heavier, Kamonsuang recommends a “nutty professor” (Bt130) - a hot waffle topped with peanut butter and chocolate and served with ice cream.
“A hot waffle smells great and goes well with ice cream. I’ll be making mango ice cream in the summer and soon I’ll be offering scones made from sakura and chestnut,” Kamonsuang says.
Worth sampling now are green tea scones served with bitter chestnut sauce and sweet jam (Bt120) and macha latte (Bt95). Coffee lovers can enjoy espresso, Americano, latte, cappuccino and mocha made from Arabica beans from Doi Chang. Prices range from Bt50 to Bt105.
Also on offer is Molten chocolate lava with ice cream, a strawberry fresh cream honey butter waffle and a super rich waffle in nutella sauce topped with bananas and whipping cream.
