The Vanity Fair writer’s best-selling biography “Elizabeth the Queen” reveals, for example, that a wall of privacy prevents even her best friends from asking about her personal feelings.
Agence France-Presse reports that Bedell Smith, armed with tacit approval from Buckingham Palace, grilled the monarch’s “entourage” for more of the type of gush she put in her books about Princess Diana, JFK and Jackie O and the Clintons.
She learned that Prince Philip was quite ticked off when the queen refused to take his family name, Mountbatten, after their 1947 wedding and her accession to the throne.
More interesting is this business about Liz Windsor “living in her own little bubble”, which her pals dare not poke. “She’s very interested in their families, but there’s a kind of a scrim in front of her,” Beddell Smith says.
Anything else, anything at all? “One of her cousins told me that when she gets frustrated, there’s a weed in Scotland called the sticky willy, and she goes out into the fields and pulls it up.”
You go, Lo!
Actress-singer Jennifer Lopez said on Twitter – oh, are you still reading this? Okay, we’ll continue. In fact Lopez, who’s 42, and her new back-up-dancer boyfriend, who’s 24, both tweeted that love doesn’t care about age.
Casper Smart tweeted that he didn’t care what other people think of their relationship because “our hearts are endless”, AFP reports. Lopez hasn’t confirmed there even is a relationship, but she re-tweeted what he said.
Another echo went like this: “Close your ears and open your hearts. Love and be happy!”
Later: “Our ages are mere reminders of the hours logged on this earth and the precious time remaining ... Age, status, n opinions of others are irrelevant.”
Not tweeted: Madonna and Demi Moore have had their hunks of young manhood, so why shouldn’t J-Lo?
