As he’s since explained, he wants people with wealth to share it with schools for the benefit of all the kids, not to bribe headmasters into letting their own kids in.
In a chat with Nation reporters, Suchart said he’s not rattled by the adverse publicity, but instead quite proud to be such a topic of discussion after less than a month on the job. “I never studied communications, but I can still do better than The Nation in terms of news!” he joked.
Suchart certainly got off to a good start in his post, being photographed arriving at the ministry by bus. It’s also worth noting that he clipped the picture out of a newspaper by himself as a keepsake – no scissors-wielding PR team required.
So he comes across as a very atypical politician. He vows that he’ll never wallow in the cesspool of corruption. “I’m content with what I have, a small home on 90 square wah. I don’t even need a maid.
“And I don’t accept any invitations for the morning. All my appointments are later in the day. The morning I spend by myself thinking about plans and stuff. Other politicians spend the morning drinking coffee with someone else!”
Reya unleashed
Our secret’s out: Taitao and Somtao Sucharitkul have been spotted around Nation headquarters and Araya “Chompoo” Hargate has met Nation Broadcasting boss Adisak Limparungpatanakij.
What’s happening is they’re working on “Reya the Musical”, an opera-style extravaganza that Somtao is penning, based on the novel his mother Taitao wrote.
Chompoo, whose portrayal of Reya in the Channel 3 TV series won several awards, is keen for the challenge of the stage, having thanked Taitao for such a dream character.
The project is taking shape, but there’s still time to join the cast. If you’ve got the talent, e-mail [email protected] by the end of the month.
