DNP: Why is Elephant Park being harassed?

SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2012

Lek Chailert, the founder of the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, complains that the Department of National Parks (DNP) are still harassing her on a daily basis.

She also says she has received many threats. According to a petition being circulated, there are l6 elephant camps in the surrounding area that have no registration papers yet no action is being taken against those camps. Lek is particularly worried that a blind elephant at her Elephant Nature Park will die if it is taken away.
Why is the media not giving coverage to this issue? Isn’t elephant welfare considered a newsworthy issue in Thailand? I am respectfully asking the DNP to respond to these accusations.
Instead of threatening people with lawsuits could you please explain to the public why the Elephant Nature Park – one of the most reputable rehabilitation centres for elephants in the world – is being singled out. I’m not making an accusation. I’m just asking a simple question.
