I am constantly bemused at what chronic liars Thai politicians are. Even when caught red-handed they concoct the most ridiculous excuses and continue to lie, rather than just owning up to the blatant wrongdoing everyone else can see. Thaksin seems to think he can say anything and it will be believed. Now he informs us he is talking to the judiciary and will wave his magic wand and all the red shirts in jail will be set free.
What about the recent case of the politician who claimed the millions in his bank account was from working overtime and nobody had really seen all those millions in his house, it was all just a big misunderstanding. I hope the burglars were given back their Bt13 million because this guy swears it was only Bt5 million, not the Bt18 million the police found.
Just once before I die, I would like to see just one Thai politician stand up in the House and say “What I did was wrong. I will apologise and resign immediately for the good of the country and to set an example for others to follow.” I know it won’t happen.
I’m just waiting to hear the excuses from the officials involved in the missing ephedrine tablet cases. You can be sure it was somebody else’s fault. I’m also waiting to hear of the arrest of the politician who allegedly fired ten rounds from his Glock into a political opponent’s head. Can’t wait to hear how that one will be spun. I’m also patiently waiting to see if anybody other than the delivery boys will be arrested in a drug bust. Millions of tablets and kilos of “ice” are being seized daily but no arrest of either the suppliers or the buyers? A cynical person may suspect it’s all just a big charade like the imaginary crackdown and closure of casinos in Bangkok.
One day in the distant future, maybe someone will realise the face they are trying to save just isn’t worth saving, and a wealthy person or politician might actually spend a day in jail. In the meantime, the Kingdom of Illusions stumbles on and we’ll continue to hear liars claiming it was an ear infection that gave them the wobbles rather than just admitting they had one too many drinks.
