Letter on Thai kids' education was silly

Ref: "Alarming gaps in Gump knowledge", yesterday.

What an astonishing letter from Hortense Beasley in regard to Thai kids lacking the intellect to know such names as Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and Tom Hanks. Are you assuming they can read the credits at the end of movies, or are you just saying they are totally dim?
Besides Tom Hanks I have never heard of the other two and have no idea at all just what they have to do with education, Thai or otherwise, so just what “education system” are you studying?
Many years ago my then 15-year-old son was on an educational exchange scheme with an American student of the same age from Boston, Massachusetts who, upon being told by my wife to smarten up as we were going out to see a Shakespeare play, came up with the question: “What sort of game is that?”
Presumably his educational intake was inspired by George W Bush, who was once asked about junior education and responded, “is our children learning”. And he continued, “childrens do learn”.
Hortense, I just assume you are American and know offhand the name of the prime minister of Bangladesh, or even the name of the Thai minister of education. Of course you do!
