The Lady is on the right track

Re: "The Lady will learn some hard lessons", Letters, April 27.

Roland Watson reckoned that Aung San Suu Kyi must have regretted participating in a lopsided constitution by sweeping all the by-election seats except one.
The objection to swearing in with the word “protection” of the constitution is a warning to the West to not be too euphoric about lifting sanctions completely. Instead of completely condemning the feeble [reform] effort of the army, the Lady was wise in putting one foot in the small opening of the army’s democracy. In so doing, her people can look to a better future, which is now certain – and also her continuing protestation. All eyes are now on the army’s treatment of the Lady, since Myanmar is Aung San Suu Kyi and Aung San Suu Kyi is Myanmar. Once the can of suppression is pierced, widespread demand for the army to ease the pressure will follow. The situation is not dissimilar to Thailand in the 1960s, or the Arab Spring, in which the digital world has quickened the pace of democracy.
No, sir, the Lady is no fool.
