Why not lift health and safety standards?

"Minimum wage not the only issue for workers" says your editorial of 1 May.

Indeed not, it seems. “Many workers risk their lives in their everyday tasks. They include high-rise construction workers, factory workers and miners, and we have witnessed how hazardous their occupations can be. Employers and welfare authorities should ensure that these workers receive the compensation they duly deserve.”
Exactly why is it that Thai workers are risking their lives every day? Does the Kingdom not have workplace health and safety laws and regulations and authorities charged with seeing that these are enforced and that workers are not put in harm’s way? Perhaps your call would be better directed towards urging that standards here are raised and worker safety improved rather than a ridiculous and outdated call for what amounts to “danger money.”
