Despite some hiccups on the final day, which was competed under slight drizzle in the morning, Thaworn fired a solid 67 for a total of 21-under-par 267 at the Luang Prabang Golf Club to capture his third trophy on the Asean PGA Tour. The Thai had won the 2009 Heritage Melaka Classic and the 2010 Singha Esan events.
Heading into the final day with an eight shot advantage over Thanyakorn Khrongpha, the 46-year-old found his lead cut to five after bogeys on the fourth and 13th holes. Bayron, who was playing a hole ahead, hit eight birdies which propelled him from six-under at the start of the round to 14 under on the 14th hole. However the Thai star blasted two back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to dash the hopes of Bayron, who suffered his first bogey on the finishing hole.
“I’m overwhelmed to win this tournament because it’s the first event of the Asean PGA Tour this year. It’s even more special because I won the first international golf event organised in Laos,’’ said Thaworn, who won US$13,000.
“It’s a combination of luck and playing well. I have been lucky from the first day and I hope to continue my good form,” added Thaworn, who after the award distribution ceremony caught a flight back home to prepare for next week’s Singha Pattaya Open, the second stop on the Asean Tour.
The Singha Pattaya Open will be played at Burapha Golf Club from May 10 to 13.
