IronKids make a big splash

The IronKids Phuket 2012 series saw 79 children from kindergarten age to high-school seniors battle for supremacy at the Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club (TSLC).

Sakda “Ben” Kammungkan and Annalis Johnson were the Senior winners (13-17 years old), from a relatively small field. The intermediate age group was the largest field with 37 participants, seeing Chris Thomson, a regular IronKids Phuket first-place finisher, taking a strong lead to win the age group overall, and Maxime and Chloe Schrijnemaekers leading the girls, finishing just a minute apart, in first and second place respectively.
Claire Ratcliffe, race director of TSLC IronKids Phuket, said the sport was catching on fast and had captured the imagination of children and parents alike. “We had several adults join the Seniors Division,” she said. “This is a great way for beginner adult triathletes to join in the fun of racing and get a taste for it.”
Paradorn Mohr was the fastest of the juniors to complete the 50m swim leg, and combined with his 3km bike and 500m run, he crossed the finish line in 12min 51sec. Winning the Juniors female category in 14:25 was Nanako McIntosh in her strongest IronKids Phuket finish.
The Juniors’ course is a 50m swim, 3km bike, followed by a 500m run. The intermediate race distances are a 150m swim, 6km bike, 1.5km run and the seniors race distances are a 300m swim, 12km bike, and a 3km run.
There will be another trial race on October 28, preparing children for the official TSLC Ironkids Phuket Championships race on December 1. For more information on the IronKids Phuket Series, visit www.IronKidsPhuket.com.
