There was some angst at the World Economic Forum when PM Yingluck appeared to be upstaged by Aung San Suu Kyi. Suu Kyi was very clear that corruption was the major problem in her country. Yingluck had the chance to grab centre stage by claiming that corruption was completely under control in Thailand: the police look after the drugs and the clubs; the government takes care of the rest.
Somsak Pola is arch in his allegation that you can’t pin anything on Thaksin. He would have us believe that Al Capone was merely a tax evader. There are many charges that have yet to be laid against Thaksin if he returns. It is the objective of the Unity Bill to defy legal norms, to change laws that were in force in Thaksin’s time, to allow Thaksin to come back unscathed.
