The event is part of the unprecedented Bt500 million deal that Chang beer-maker ThaiBev signed with the two Spanish giants earlier this year. It offers amateur soccer players nationwide the opportunity to experience first-hand “El Clasico” – arguably the biggest match in club football.
The country’s first national four-a-side tournament comprises two categories: the under-20 division and the open class with no age limit.
The action kicks off in Udon Thani on July 6 and 7 and then moves on to 28 other provinces around the country to decide teams for the finals at CentralWorld in September.
Sorrakit Latitham, ThaiBev marketing manager, said Chang Road to El Clasico was the first of a series of events planned to help develop Thai football this year.
“We’ve always supported Thai football, from youth level to the national team. This year, we have the “Football Mobile Unit” project delivering coaching sessions for children across the country, while the ThaiBev Football Academy is in its eighth year.
“We also are considering bringing back the “Chang Thai to Everton” project, which sends young talents to train at the Premier League club. We believe all these programmes will upgrade our youth football.
“The Chang Road to El Clasico event offers an opportunity for our young athletes to showcase their skills in a competitive environment. Any fan can take part in the tournament – you don’t have to be a Real Madrid or Barcelona supporter,” said Sorrakit.
As well as the action on the pitch, competition days will also feature mini concerts, exhibition matches featuring celebrities and games.
