Thai Post not good enough

On June 12 I went, via transportation costing me Bt350, to retrieve a package from the Thai Post Sukhumvit branch.

They had notified me that Bt638 in duty was due on the package. I knew this was an error because they, for some unknown reason, valued the contents at Bt5,000 when in fact I had paid only Bt634 for the contents. I had a receipt from the US shipper clearly showing the value, but the Thai Post clerks insisted the contents were worth Bt5,000. No amount of logic, reasoning or proof swayed them from collecting the Bt638 in illegitimate duty. It probably would have helped if someone there understood English. They could not even provide an address where I could send a letter to complain and request a refund.
So I spent three hours getting to the location, several kilometres from metropolitan Pattaya, and trying to get some understanding from the Thai Post people, plus Bt350 and Bt638, when this package should have been delivered in the normal fashion with no duty.
When and if the Asean Economic Community becomes a reality, foreign people and companies are going to demand much better than what Thai Post now calls “customer service”.
